Whether used or new, cargo shipping containers can be used for a variety of purposes including storage. But these containers, like many things re-purposed for uses other than what they were designed for, need to be slightly modified when used for storage.
With their very sturdy sealed metal construction, unmodified containers have the potential to become very hot & wet “saunas” and could actually cause damage to your stored goods. For this reason cross-flow ventilation is essential within your container to protect your stored goods from excessive heat and moisture, which could also lead to mildew, mold, and corrosion to metal items stored. Most containers come with 2 very small “vents” located high on the walls on opposite corners, but these vents are designed and intended to only relieve built up pressure within the container caused by sun exposure. They're not capable of providing the necessary cross-flow ventilation needed to remove excess heat and moisture so much larger vents need to be strategically installed to create passive cross flow ventilation through your container’s interior.
